The article presents a retrospective analysis of travel essays by foreign authors published in the Ukrainian magazines Vitchyzna and Vsesvit during the Soviet period. Using historical-typological and comparative-typological methods, as well as content analysis and discourse analysis, the study examines the genre-specific and thematic features of the essays and traces the influence of ideological narratives on the content of the texts. It has been established that Vitchyzna magazine more frequently published essays influenced by official Soviet ideology. Vsesvit magazine, in contrast, performed an educational function and served as a platform where foreign authors had greater freedom of expression. The study demonstrates that the analyzed texts possess the main genre characteristics of the travel essay, including narrative subjectivity, a distinctly expressed authorial voice, and a combination of documentary and artistic elements.
